Iowa terror drill puts political correctness above realism

More than 300 people will be involved in an emergency drill at Treynor High School in Pottawattamie County, Iowa on March 26. Because it needs to have a terrorism angle to be eligible for federal funding, planners for this community of 919 have worked up a terror back story in which disaffected, young white supremacists with very distant connections to violence-espousing groups shoot dozens of people. William Petroski writes for the DesMoines Register:
Craig Halverson of Griswold, national director of the Minuteman Patriots, an activist group that opposes illegal immigration, said today he is concerned that the exercise is intended to portray people who legally possess guns and who fight illegal immigration as extremists. Members of his organization, as well as members of the Tea Party Patriots and the 9/12 Project, are calling and emailing Iowa’s elected officials to voice their objections, he said.
“We are trying to get this stopped because all it is doing is building up prejudices by calling people white supremacists and stuff like that,” Halverson said. “We are mad at the government for ignoring illegal immigration, but nobody is going to run out there and start killing people in Iowa or anything like that.”
Robert Ussery of Des Moines, state director of the Iowa Minutemen activist group, said he believes the exercise will defame patriot organization members by depicting t hem as criminals. Ussery is among many members of patriot groups who have read a copy of the exercise plan that has been circulating through email groups.
“Most of the people who break the law and are involved in school shootings don’t quote the Constitution or love their country,” Ussery said. “Most of the people who I am involved with feel that in order to fix the situation we need to change the laws and work lawfully within the system.”
Analysis
It seems obvious the scenario is a replay of Columbine with some politically correct ideas thrown in that are unmoored from reality.
- Evil white hicks who are violently opposed to immigrants in their community: check.
- Virtuous illegal aliens who didn’t break any laws to be here: check.
- Mindlessly violent patriotic white people: check.
- Gun-toting Tea Partiers: check.
It’s a politically correct melange of the anti-Tea Party brew peddled by MSNBC and the big media and given approval by the Democratic Party to keep their voters scared and voting for them.
It’s pretty safe to say that whoever wrote this scenario back-story watches MSNBC, listens to NPR, and thinks he or she is much more enlightened than the average Iowa corn farmer.

Great write-up BeagleScout.
I did one too at my site.
Even have a link to the official ‘exercise’ document — with an offline electronic and hard copy just in case the government file ‘accidentally’ gets disappeared’.
Forty-one pages of government’s gonna getcha policies and parameters.
A sure bet nobody with long-term tactical experience was involved in the actual event planning – no way.
In other words…… “Nudge”.
What is the link to your site, Kenny?
And as for nudging, I wonder when a nudge becomes coercion. Or are we already there?
In case Kenny doesn’t see this, here is his site:

Here is the link to the specific article:

What’s going on is far deeper and subtler than PC – it’s part of a long-term strategy of poisoning the well. But this would take more than a comment to explain.
A bit more elaboration…PC may well have figured into the scenario choice in that they didn’t want to “offend” certain groups by having them as the villains – and white males with guns are a “safe” target. However, I think this does fit into a larger pattern – why throw in the anti-immigration issue other than to play to stereotypes. And if we keep having such trainings, this just adds to the relentless stereotyping going on elsewhere that the media loves to propagate.
Hey, this was cancelled due to public outcry. http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2011/03/dhs_funded_propaganda_event_ca.html
